Even though I grew up in LA (in a family that took the afternoon Herald-Examiner rather than the Times or the SF Chronicle), the Herb Caen influence was still a thing. In his case, the ellipsis was a pause and a segue rather than an omission. A marriage must make use of a more orthodox grammar since omissions of memory and reminder do seem to be one of the keys of success!
